Little empirical information is available about how teachers of Indonesian provide input to their students in the classroom, nor is there significant analysis of language input in teaching materials. In this seminar, I will describe how my work adapting Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) and text processing tools will be used to transcribe corpora of ‘teacher-talk' and YouTube teaching materials. Against the backdrop of usage-based questions of implicit and explicit language exposure in the second or foreign language teaching setting, I propose these corpora will provide empirical insight into how pedagogies relate to diglossic language use, language variation, and self-categorisation expressed through pronouns. Along this journey I suggest parameters for entry level work in Elpis/Kaldi (TAP project), examine paradigms in the interpretation of teacher speech, describe the pains and joys of preparing rich teaching materials for processing, and present a survey of existing work in this space. Together, these multidisciplinary tools and methods explore the potential insights of applying ASR and corpus linguistics in this setting.
