Scale up workshop: Meeting the challenge of the documentary enterprise

Archiving, Evolution, Learning, Processing, Shape, Technology

Date: 6 February 2015

CoEDL members will get together to meet the challenge of scaling up the documentary enterprise.

They will discuss:

(a) Developing new methods of language documentation through clever technologies (apps, crowd-sourcing etc.) able to get as extensive coverage of the world's languages as possible

(b) Expanding the sizes of corpora for little-known languages

(c) Planning maximum levels of comparability across the data gathered

(d) Working out the most effective way to coordinate the different expertise and resources of COEDL and two allied Max Planck Institutes – for

Psycholinguistics, in Nijmegen, and for the Sciences of History, in Jena.

In addition to the Scale-Up Workshop proper, there will be an associated mini-workshop on the Wednesday morning, drawing together approaches from evolutionary biologists on the one hand and linguists on the other, with further input from the philosophy of evolution. The purpose of this is to examine a different sense of scale up: namely, how we model the scaling up of processes of change from the micro- to the macro- (individuals to species, individual speakers to sociolects to languages).
