Dr Cat Kutay has been working many years with schools and universities to develop material for teaching Aboriginal languages. Using linguist's recordings, dictionaries and grammar she has been developing web services to provide tools to assist teachers in making learning material through online shared resources.
Working in the reclamation of NSW languages the focus is on assisting both the students and teachers with language support tools. Cat has also been developing mobile applications with audio games for student's to practise from weekly wordlists.
Cat is also linking Aboriginal language resources to ALVEO (http://alveo.edu.au) which is a recently completed platform for collaborative research on Human Communication that provides a repository for large collections of examples of language use.
By linking this language research platform to the online Aboriginal language dictionaries the project will provide a richer collection of resources for teachers and learners. While this project will focus on a limited number of languages, we will lay the groundwork for adding new languages in the future.
Cat Kutay is a Computing and Electrical Engineering expert and has been working in Sydney for over ten years developing software for teaching Aboriginal culture and languages and techniques for experiential learning of renewable engineering systems. She completed her PhD in support for online group learning using social constructivist pedagogy in 2006. She focuses on teaching resources appropriate to online and blended learning for University courses in engineering and computing, and school based language-learning techniques including support for learning grammar and speech.
Her research is in the area of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning and draws on concepts from traditional relationships and responsibilities. She also researches teaching content and approaches and how this affects the optimal methods for course delivery online including gaming and multimedia feeds such as podcasts.
