Call for papers

The Australian National University (ANU) is hosting the 24th International Conference on Historical Linguistics (ICHL24), from 1st July – 5th July 2019. Abstracts are invited for workshop proposals to be submitted by 29th July 2018 and papers for the general session and workshops are to be submitted by the extended deadline of 12th October 2018.

This biennial conference brings together historical linguists and specialists in related fields to explore advances in areas including methods and practices of linguistic reconstruction, formal approaches to language change, historical sociolinguistics, computational approaches to historical linguistics, contact and areal linguistics, and interfaces between historical linguistics and other disciplines, and many other related areas.

Workshop proposals should be a maximum of 2 pages (excluding references) and give a description that includes the workshop research questions and goals, as well as a list of up to five potential participants with their possible paper topics. Conference participants will also be invited to submit abstracts for possible inclusion in a workshop in the general call for abstracts. Acceptance of workshops will be announced by mid-August 2018.

Abstracts for papers in the general session should be no more than one page with 12pt font, and can include a second page for references. Scholars may submit a maximum of two papers, whether sole authored or co-authored. This includes submissions to workshops. Acceptance of abstracts will be announced by mid-November 2018. Papers at the conference will be allocated 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions.

Abstracts may be submitted for the general session or for one of the workshops. Abstracts submitted for a workshop, but not accepted there, will be automatically considered for inclusion in the general session. If authors wish to submit an abstract for a workshop, we encourage them to contact the workshop organizers ahead of time for advice on workshop coherence.

Workshop proposals and abstracts will be reviewed by members of the ICHL24 Organising Committee.
