Mentoring from Appen available to CoEDL staff and students

Appen is a Sydney-based company that creates language and speech data for machine learning, including applications such as automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech, and machine translation. Appen’s staff have diverse academic backgrounds including phonetics, syntax, language documentation, and computational linguistics. Many of the skills used on a day-to-day basis are relevant to the kind of work going on in CoEDL, for example, data management and cleaning, corpus development, pronunciation lexicons, phonetic alignment and annotation, and specialised recording techniques. Technical skills include Python, Praat, bash (unlocking the power of the command line), advanced regular expressions, and more.

As one of CoEDL’s industry partners, Appen is offering mentoring support for CoEDL staff and students who are working on a project using these kinds of skills, but who need some further support to help get it done. The mentoring can take place at a distance (e.g. through Skype or Zoom), and may involve just one, or several, meetings.

For more information, please send a description of your project and the support you need to Sasha Wilmoth (Uni Melb PhD student, and Appen staff member) and/or (CoEDL CI, ANU).
