'The Semantics of Nouns' launched

Linguistics (general)

Date: 10 July 2017

The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language has hosted the launch of a new volume showcasing the latest research on the semantics of nouns in both familiar and less well-documented languages.

“The Semantics of Nouns”, edited by CoEDL affiliate Dr Zhengdao Ye, shows how detailed analysis of meaning, anchored in a cross-linguistic and cross-domain perspective, can lead to unexpected insights into the common and particular ways in which speakers of different languages conceptualise, categorise and order the world around them.

The book was launched by CoEDL director Professor Nicholas Evans and CoEDL Deputy Director Jane Simpson.

During the launch, Dr Ye, who teaches at the ANU School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, expressed her profound intellectual debt to Professor Anna Wierzbicka, to whom the book is dedicated.
