Abstract:

I will present preliminary results from a project focused on the language development of children learning Yélî Dnye, a Papuan isolate renowned for its extraordinary phonological inventory, widespread use of suppletion, complex kin term system, and more. In this talk I will focus in particular on the broad characteristics of children's early speech environment and their early phonological development, based on both observational and experimental findings. As this project is ongoing, I am very eager to hear your questions, suggestions, and other feedback.
