Recently theorists have developed competing accounts of the origins and nature of protolanguage, the evolution of language, and connections between speech, song, and sign. Debate over these accounts is lively. Did music precede language? Were the first languages gestural? And so on. In this talk I will evaluate the leading hypotheses and survey various lines of evidence.
