Workshop: Creating and running linguistic 'escape room' outreach events
Presenter: Rachel Hendery (Western Sydney University)
Description: Western Sydney University has been running a COEDL-sponsored escape room called Rosita Stone, for the past few years, as an outreach event for high school students. We take puzzles from the Australian Computational Linguistics Olympiad (OzClo) and turn them into physical puzzles, the solution of each being clues to the next puzzle. Students have to solve each puzzle in order to unlock the final key to 'escape the room'. Rosita Stone, or similar escape rooms, are easy to create, fun to run, and they really get potential students excited about linguistics. In this session I'll show you how to create and run an escape room like this, and inspire you to create your own puzzles or to take Rosita to visit your events.
